Atlanta, Ga. - The N.C. Wesleyan men's tennis team capped an exciting 2018 USA South Festival for Battling Bishop fans with a 5-0 sweep of 2nd-seeded Methodist University to secure the program's tenth straight tournament crown and NCAA berth. The top-seeded Bishops had previously reached the finals via a 9-0 sweep of Averett University in Saturday's semifinal action, completing yet another perfect season against USA South opponents. Wesleyan, in fact, did not surrender a single point to a conference foe this season, out-scoring league opponents 104-0 overall.
Versus 3rd-seeded Averett on Saturday, Wesleyan cruised to a doubles sweep, led by the duo of Ioannis Brokakis/Roberto Puig who pulled out an 8-6 victory at the #1 position. In singles play, USA South Player of the Year Sebastian Sikh was a three-set winner over AU's Nicolas Yanes (4-6, 6-2, 6-1), while his doubles partner, David Chang, also notched a three-set win at #6 (3-6, 6-0, 6-0). The remaining four singles matches were won in straights as Wesleyan punched its championship ticket.
Inclement weather on Sunday forced the title match to be played at Georgia Tech's Indoor Facility in Atlanta at 7:00pm, but the change in venue did not deter the Bishops. Wesleyan cruised to a doubles sweep by 8-3, 8-1, and 8-2 scores, respectively, and quickly sealed the victory in singles action. Freshman Aditya Iyer's 6-1, 6-1 win at #5 singles brought NCWC to within a point of the title, while junior J.D. Telles' 6-0, 6-2 victory at #3 clinched the match.
For his efforts, Telles was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after going undefeated at #2 doubles and #3 singles. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Sikh, Brokakis, and Iyer.
The 22nd-ranked Battling Bishops (18-3) will now await opponents and seeding for the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament slated for early May. Please continue to check www.ncwcsports.com for updates as more information becomes available.
