Bishops Hold Off St. Andrews to go 2-0 at Roger Taylor Invite

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team picked up their third straight victory on Saturday defeating St. Andrews University 72-64 to go 2-0 at the 32nd annual Roger Taylor Invitational over the weekend in Rocky Mount. Wesleyan also defeated Southern Virginia on Friday night 88-61.

Wesleyan improves to 3-4 on the season with the win.

Wesleyan got out to a 37-24 lead on the Knights shooting 45 percent in the first half led by 12 points from senior guard Cameron Martin. They held St. Andrews (2-7) to just 10 baskets and only 20 percent from three.

SAU would come out shooting much better in the second half going on a 23-10 run to tie the Bishops at 47-all with 9 minutes to play. The Bishops, though, would come right back using three 3-pointers from freshman guard Garrett Phillips, a layup from senior Mitch Layton and another three from senior Rico Bullock to go up 61-48 to essentially put the game away as only 7 minutes remained.

Senior center A.J. Frye led the Bishops with 18 points and a team-high 6 assists along with 8 rebounds and a steal while Bullock scored all ten of his points in the second half along with 4 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Bishops. Fellow senior, forward Mitch Layton also played well leading all Bishops with 13 rebounds while also scoring 8 points and recording a block. 

Shooting Guards Garrett Phillips and Cam Martin each finished with season-highs of 12 and 14 points respectively with Martin also adding 5 rebounds.

Wesleyan will next be in action next Saturday, Dec. 14 when they travel to Div. 1 Elon University to battle the Phoenix in an exhibition at 1:30 PM.
